Maryland's recent 2-1 comeback win at North Carolina (Oct. 24, 2010) – led by Sade Ayinde's pair of goals in the final 23 minutes – was noteworthy on several levels:

• Maryland became the fourth team (along with Notre Dame, Duke and Florida State) ever to post two or more "non-losses" vs. UNC at Fetzer Field (also a 1-1 tie on 11/1/02).
• It was the second time this season (but had not happened previously since '99) that a team came from behind to beat UNC at Fetzer.
• It was only the 10th home loss for UNC ever at Fetzer Field (in 29 varsity seasons).
• Maryland became the 13th team ever with two or more "non-losses" vs. UNC (1-31-1).
• The Terps now are one of only 21 teams ever to beat UNC (31 all-time losses).

RARE WIN AT FETZER
 – Earlier in the 2010 season, two teams – Texas A&M (3-0 loss on Aug. 20; series now 1-13-0) and Stanford (2-2 tie on Aug. 27; series now 0-8-3) – had the chance to improve on their modest all-time records vs. North Carolina, which has enjoyed sustained dominance over the past three decades (particularly at home) ... then, in a span of 31 days, the Tar Heels suffered a pair of home losses (2-3 vs. Boston College; 9/24/10 ... 2-1 vs. Maryland, 10/24/10) at Fetzer Field ... consider the following:

• It marked only the second time that UNC has lost twice at home in the same season (since '82) and the closest back-to-back home losses in the program's history ... the 2007 UNC team lost at home vs. South Carolina on 9/1/07 and lost at Fetzer again, but much later in the season, 11/24/07 in a 3-2 NCAA round-of-16 game vs. Notre Dame.

• The Eagles and Terrapins became only the 20th and 21st different teams ever to beat UNC (regardless of site), in 29 NCAA-sanctioned seasons ... the defeats were only the 30th and 31st all-time losses for UNC in those 29 seasons (679-31-23/.942; as of 10/24/10).

• UNC has lost only 10 times at home (291-10-7/.956; in 29 NCAA-sanctioned seasons, since '82), as of 10/24/10 ... Maryland's 2-1 win at Fetzer marked only the 17th time in those 29 seasons (roughly once every two years) that UNC has suffered a loss/tie at home.

• Prior to the 2010 season, North Carolina had not surrendered a lead at home and lost since the 1999 game vs. Penn State (2-3) – but if happened vs. Boston College (UNC led 1-0 and 2-1) and again vs. Maryland (UNC led 1-0).

North Carolina All-Time Home Losses at Fetzer Field (10 times, since 1982)

10/19/94 ... 2-3 vs. Duke  (scoring sequence not currently available; will be added later)

12/1/95 ... 0-1 vs. Notre Dame  (NCAA semifinals)

9/12/99 ... 2-3 vs. Penn State  (UNC led 1-0; PSU led 3-1)

11/20/04 ... 0-1 vs. Santa Clara  (NCAA Round-of-16)

10/9/05 ... 1-2 vs. Duke  (Duke led 1-0; tied 1-1)

9/1/07 ... 0-1 vs. South Carolina

11/24/07 ... 2-3 vs. Notre Dame  (NCAA Round-of-16)  (ND led 2-0 and 3-1)

9/4/08 ... 0-1 vs. Notre Dame

9/24/10 ... 2-3 vs. Boston College  (UNC led 1-0 and 2-1)

10/24/10 ... 1-2 vs. Maryland  (UNC led 1-0)

North Carolina All-Time Home Ties at Fetzer Field (7 times, since 1982)

9/1/85 ... 3-3 vs. George Mason

8/31/86 ... 1-1 vs. Central Florida

10/27/02 ... 0-0 vs. Duke

11/1/02 ... 1-1 vs. Maryland  (UNC led 1-0)

11/25/05 ... 1-1 vs. Florida State  (NCAA quarterfinals; FSU led 1-0; advanced 5-4 on PKs)

10/30/08 ... 2-2 vs. Florida State  (UNC led 2-0)

8/27/10 ... 2-2 vs. Stanford  (Stanford led 1-0 and 2-1)

• As shown in the above list, four of the 10 teams that have beaten UNC at Fetzer Field (and one that claimed a tie) have needed three goals to do so, and all 10 Tar Heels' home losses have been by a 1-goal margin ... BC joined George Mason ('85), Duke ('94), Penn State ('99) and Notre Dame ('07) as the only teams to score three goals vs. UNC at Fetzer Field (ND had been the only one to do so since 1999).

• The 2010 season is the first time that UNC has suffered three home losses/ties in the same season (4-2-1) and is the second team the Tar Heels have lost twice at home in the season (also 2007, see note above) ... there have been only four seasons when UNC had two losses/ties at Fetzer Field: 7-0-2 in 2002, 8-1-1 in 2005, 9-2-0 in 2007 and 10-1-1 in 2008 ... the Tar Heels have gone perfect at home twice over the past six seasons (11-0-0 in 2006, 13-0-0 in '09), with a combined home record of "only" 56-6-3 (.885) during that six-year span (2005-10) ... in the previous 23 seasons (1982-2004), UNC suffered multiple home losses/ties in a season only once (7-0-2 in '02 ... 235-4-3/.977 at home from '82-'04).

THREE-GOAL ATTACK
 – North Carolina never has allowed more than three goals in a game (spanning its 29 NCAA seasons; '82-'10) and has yielded three goals only 11 times ... on Sept. 23, 2010, Boston College became the eighth different program ever to put three goals on the board vs. UNC (UConn, N.C. St. and Florida St. each have done so twice) ... spanning the past three decades, when the Tar Heels have scored at least two goals, they have compiled a win pct. over 95% from 1982-2010 (675-22-22; .954), but UNC is only 2-8-1 all-time (.227) when allowing three goals and has lost its past six games when the opponent has scored three times (0-6-0, since 1990) ... despite owning a dismal 1-40-2 all-time record vs. UNC (.048), North Carolina State is one of the three teams ever to post multiple 3-goal games vs. the Tar Heels (wild postseason games in 1987 and '90, won by UNC 5-3 and 4-3 respectively) ... 1990 is the only time that UNC has allowed three goals in a game more than once in a season.

Team that have scored three goals vs. North Carolina (1982-2010)

9/3/83 ... 1-3 at Connecticut

9/1/85 ... 3-3 vs. George Mason

10/29/87 ... 5-3 vs. North Carolina State  (ACC Final; at Duke)

9/22/90 ... 2-3 at Connecticut

11/1/90 ... 4-3 vs. North Carolina State  (NCAA Quarterfinal)

10/19/94 ... 2-3 vs. Duke

9/12/99 ... 2-3 vs. Penn State

10/17/00 ... 2-3 at Florida State  (2 OT)

11/24/07 ... 2-3 vs. Notre Dame  (NCAA Round-of-16)

10/22/09 ... 2-3 at Florida State

9/24/10 ... 2-3 vs. Boston College

(UConn, N.C. St. and Florida St. each have two 3-goal games vs. UNC)

MORE RARITIES – Earlier in the 2010 season, Stanford – which already was one of only 13 teams ever to post two "non-losses" (wins/ties) vs. UNC – became one of eight teams ever to register three or more wins/ties vs. UNC (0-8-3) ... others on that list: Notre Dame 4-12-2, Santa Clara 4-14-0, Florida State 2-22-2, Duke 2-41-1, George Mason 1-14-2, North Carolina State 1-40-2 and Central Florida 0-16-3 ... Stanford is 0-2-2 vs. UNC in the eight-year tenure of head coach Paul Ratcliffe (0-1-2 over the past three seasons).

• Only four teams have posted multiple "non-losses" vs. UNC at Fetzer Field (from '82-'10) ... Notre Dame has beaten UNC three times at Fetzer, Duke has two wins and a tie vs. UNC at Fetzer, Maryland has a win and tie at Fetzer vs. the 'Heels, and Florida State has posted two ties vs. UNC at Fetzer.

• Santa Clara (2004, round-of-16) and Notre Dame ('07, rd-of-16) are the only teams ever to beat UNC in the NCAAs, prior to the quarterfinals.

• UNC has lost only seven times in the NCAAs (106-7-1; .934).

• Only three teams (four times total; ND twice) have beaten UNC in the NCAAs on its home surface, Fetzer Field (75-3-1/.956: Notre Dame 1-0 in the 1995 semifinals; Santa Clara 1-0/OT in 2004 rd-of-16; Florida State 1-1 in 2005 quarterfinals/FSU advanced on PKs; and ND 3-2 in 2007 rd-of-16).

TOUGH TO BEAT
 – UNC’s all-time record (679-31-23/.942; as of 10/24/10) in 29 NCAA seasons (1982-2010) includes only 13 opponents that have totaled at least two games vs. the Tar Heels that were not losses (wins or ties) ... Notre Dame is one of those teams with two “non-losses” vs. UNC and owns the best win percentages from that group (.278: 4-12-2), ahead of Miami's .250 (2-6-0) and Santa Clara’s .211 (4-15-0) ... all other teams (besides ND, Miami and SCU) are only 21-642-21 vs. UNC (.046; as of 10/24/10), with ND and SCU accounting for roughly one-fourth of the all-time wins over UNC (8-of-31) ... late in the 2010 season, one more ACC foe (Duke; 10/28) will have the chance to join ND and SCU as teams that have beaten UNC three or more times ... here’s the list of teams with at least two wins/ties vs. UNC (series records include only NCAA-sanctioned varsity games), as of Oct. 24, 2010:

Pct. – Team (varsity record vs. UNC; since '82/NCAA games; as of 10/24/10)

As shown above, SCU's Smith has coached four wins vs. UNC while four others have led their teams to a pair of wins vs. UNC: ND's Petrucelli (also two ties) and Waldrum, UConn's Tsantiris, and Miami's Taliaferro ... GMU's Leung and FSU's Krikorian aborh have a win and two ties in their coaching careers vs. UNC ... W&M's Daly and Duke's Church each have a win and tie vs. UNC ... Stanford's Ratcliffe, UCF's Barker, NC State's Gross and UVa's Swanson all have coached their teams to a pair of ties vs. the Tar Heels.

11 other teams have one varsity win vs. UNC (since '82):
South Carolina (1-1-0), Cortland State (1-1-0), Missouri-St. Louis (1-2-0), Penn State (1-4-0), Virginia Tech (1-7-0), Florida (1-8-0), UMass (1-6-0), Boston College (1-10-0), Texas A&M (1-13-0), Clemson (1-24-0) and Wake Forest (1-24-0)

Teams with multiple wins vs. UNC
4 – Notre Dame and Santa Clara
2 – Connecticut, Duke, Miami and Florida State

NCAA TOURNAMENT SUCCESS – Only five teams have knocked UNC out of the NCAAs prior to the title game ... of those five teams, one has gone on to win the NCAA title (ND, in 1995):

Team that have defeated/advanced past UNC in the NCAAs (prior to the final game)
1995 – Notre Dame (semifinals) ... beat Portland in final
2002 – Santa Clara (semifinals) ... lost to Portland in final
2004 – Santa Clara (round-of-16) ... lost to Notre Dame in semifinals
2005 – Florida State (quarterfinals/PKs) ... lost to UCLA in semifinals
2007 – Notre Dame (round-of-16) ... lost to Florida State in semifinals

Notes: UNC has advanced to the quarterfinals in 26 of its first 28 NCAA seasons (25 trips to the semifinals; 23 title-game appearances and 20 NCAA titles ... lost 1985 final vs. George Mason, 0-2 ... lost '98 final vs. Florida, 0-1 ... lost '01 final vs. Santa Clara, 0-1).
